Covid-19 has turned many lives upside down. It has disrupted every aspect of our work life and society. For many of us, it has acted as a ‘wake-up call’, as people reassess their priorities, lifestyles and careers.
A recent study conducted by PeopleCert, has found that 39% of respondents are considering changing careers. In fact, one in ten want to retrain and reskill for a totally different job.
Sadly, a lot of people have lost jobs and businesses and although the government’s recent marketing drive went down like a lead balloon, adapting to the post-lockdown workplace is more important than ever.
One such move that is proving popular is a transition into the gas industry. And an IGQ New Entrants Course is the ideal way to start your career in gas.
What does a gas engineer do?
If you are considering whether to start your career in gas, it is important to know exactly what you will be expected to do on a day-to-day basis. Obviously, like most industries, you may want to specialise in a certain aspect of gas, such as LPG. However, as a rule, a Gas Safe registered engineer will:
- Install, repair and maintain gas appliances and equipment
- Replace faulty gas appliances and systems
- Carry out annual checks and tests to ensure appliances are in full working order
- Cut, bend and join gas pipes
Legally, you must have the necessary qualifications, which as a rule, is an ACS gas qualification. You must also be Gas Safe registered. Replacing CORGI in 2009, the Gas Safe register exists to protect the public from unsafe gas work, improve standards and raise awareness of the potential dangers.
