Can gas engineers work during England’s second lockdown?
Rules are slightly different this time so the question is: can gas engineers work during England’s second lockdown?

It’s something we’re asked a lot: can gas engineers work during England’s second lockdown?
The second lockdown, which began on November 5th, is slightly different to the first, nationwide lockdown, which was far more restrictive. This time, more shops have been allowed to remain open. More people are able to work. Children are still going to school.
So what are the rules when it comes to tradespeople? Can gas engineers work during England’s second lockdown?
The simple answer is yes. Tradespeople, including gas engineers, are allowed to enter homes to carry out repairs under the rules stipulated by the government. Housing secretary, Robert Jenrick laid out key measures for the housing sector, which include:
- Renters and buyers are allowed to move house
- Builders merchants, DIY and hardware stores remain open
- Construction sites remain open
- Tradespeople are able to work in customer’s homes, as long as they socially distance
Jenrick also confirmed that as well as tradespeople, estate agents and removal companies can also enter people’s homes to continue working.
“Housing market update ahead of Thursday’s measures: Renters and homeowners will be able to move; removal firms and estate agents can operate; construction sites can and should continue; tradespeople will be able to enter homes.
“But all must follow the Covid safety guidance.”
How can gas engineers work during England’s second lockdown?
When answering the question, ‘can gas engineers work during England’s second lockdown?’ it is important to remember that certain restrictions need to be followed. Gas engineers, like all other tradespeople, are required to adhere to social distancing guidance when working, whether at a commercial premises or domestic property.
Citizens Advice stated, “Plumbers, electricians and other traders can still come to your house to carry out repairs – as long as they don’t have any symptoms of coronavirus.
“They should try to stay two metres away from you and avoid any vulnerable people.”
It is advised that gas engineers should do a risk assessment before carry out any work. This should include determining what work needs to be done, any potential risks and what precautions you should take to minimise the chance of transmitting the virus. It is also essential that you ensure that none of the residents in your home are displaying any of the symptoms of coronavirus.
