Gas Safety Week 2016 – get on board and help raise awareness

Dave Lambert • 1 September 2016

From 19-25 September 2016 is Gas Safety Week

From 19 th – 25 th September 2016, the sixth annual Gas Safety Week will see people around the country working together to spread the gas safety message.

Thousands of companies and organisations are already taking part of the national Gas Safety Week 2016 campaign. The message is simple – it’s all about raising awareness about the dangers of poorly maintained gas appliances.

To those of us who work in the industry, we know all too well how dangerous gas can be if it hasn’t been installed, maintained or repaired correctly. But there are still members of the general public who take their safety for granted. They don’t realise that they and/or members of their family or workforce could become ill or even die from a gas leak, explosion or carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. And the culprit could be an incorrectly installed, poorly maintained or badly ventilated cooker, heater or central heating boiler in their home, caravan, boat, self catering apartment or mobile home.

According to the NHS, more than 200 people end up in hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning. Approximately 50 die as a result. In 2016, a 63 year old man in Haxby died after his house was reduced to rubble after a gas explosion. In Birmingham, a man was rushed to hospital and three people left homeless after a gas explosion in April. Deaths due to gas occur each and every year. And almost all of them could have been prevented.

Pledge your support!

If you work within the gas industry, you have a responsibility towards your customers to protect them and save lives. Pledging your support for Gas Safety Week is a simple, effective way of doing so.

By taking part in Gas Safety Week 2016, you will receive a free toolkit, which includes:

  • Gas Safety Week logo
  • Images
  • Press release kit
  • Articles
  • Social media updates
  • PDFs of the official Gas Safety Week poster and leaflet

Your company name will also appear on the GasSafe Register’s Gas Safety Week website

Previous Gas Safety Weeks have seen huge support, with a record 5,123 supporters taking part in 2015, Doug, the Gas Safe Hero introduced in 2014, a ‘My Gas Hero’ competition in which children of registered gas engineers were encouraged to draw their parents as superheroes, and the Gas Map, which enables people to see how safe their area is.

You don’t even have to be Gas Safe Registered to be part of the campaign. Whether you are part of the gas industry, a consumer organisation or individual, you can help raise awareness and save lives.

Together we can make a difference, so please, just take a couple of moments to sign up to this year’s Gas Safety Week.
