From 19 th – 25 th September 2016, the sixth annual Gas Safety Week will see people around the country working together to spread the gas safety message.
Thousands of companies and organisations are already taking part of the national Gas Safety Week 2016 campaign. The message is simple – it’s all about raising awareness about the dangers of poorly maintained gas appliances.
To those of us who work in the industry, we know all too well how dangerous gas can be if it hasn’t been installed, maintained or repaired correctly. But there are still members of the general public who take their safety for granted. They don’t realise that they and/or members of their family or workforce could become ill or even die from a gas leak, explosion or carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. And the culprit could be an incorrectly installed, poorly maintained or badly ventilated cooker, heater or central heating boiler in their home, caravan, boat, self catering apartment or mobile home.
According to the NHS, more than 200 people end up in hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning. Approximately 50 die as a result. In 2016, a 63 year old man in Haxby died after his house was reduced to rubble after a gas explosion. In Birmingham, a man was rushed to hospital and three people left homeless after a gas explosion in April. Deaths due to gas occur each and every year. And almost all of them could have been prevented.
