David Lambert • 24 March 2021

It is a legal requirement that you recalibrate your gas analyser every 12 months

GTA offers a recalibration service for Testo, Anton and Kane products.

Don’t forget – you must recalibrate your gas analyser every 12 months. No, it’s not suggested. It’s not recommended. It is a legal requirement.

For those of you new to the gas industry, a flue gas analyser (commonly known as an FGA) is a tool that measures and displays the concentration of gases produced in the combustion process in fossil fuelled appliances, in order to determine whether it is operated efficiently. It enables a gas engineer to correctly diagnose any possible issues by testing gas pressures, flow and return temperatures.

Simply put, an FGA is a vital tool for any gas engineer – almost every job you complete will require the measurements your analyser provides. Therefore, it is essential that you recalibrate your gas analyser every year.

Gas analysers allow you to perform a wide range of tests on both domestic and commercial gas appliances and installations, such as boilers, cookers and grills.

Measurement functions displayed by gas analysers include:

  • Carbon monoxide
  • Oxygen content
  • Combustion efficiency (nett, gross, condensing)
  • Temperature
  • Pressure
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Tightness testing
  • Let by testing

You can also buy flue gas analysers that can provide information on other, optional functions, such as:

  • NO measurement
  • H2 compensated oxygen and CO
  • Bluetooth connectivity

Don’t put off recalibrating your FGA

It is so important that you recalibrate your gas analyser regularly. Here are just a few reasons why:

1. All testing and measuring instruments ‘drift’ over time. Regular maintenance and calibration ensures that the instrument is accurate and within the measurement limits specified by the FGA’s manufacturer

2. Flue gas analysers that are outside their calibration date are not allowed to be used – this is in accordance with British Standards BS7967 and BS EN: 50379.

3. If you are caught using a gas analyser outside its calibration date, you will likely have to re-do all of the measurements taken past this date. In addition, if any gas appliance or equipment tested is then subject to investigation, you could end up being fined or even prosecuted.

4. If you choose not to recalibrate your gas analyser every 12 months, you are not only breaking the law, but putting your career and people’s lives at risk.
