About Colchester
Colchester is a historic market town in Essex and occupies the site of what was the first major city in Roman Britain, Camulodunum. As such, Colchester is the oldest recorded town in Britain and has been a military garrison since the Roman era.
Colchester Castle is located in the Castle Park; it was built on the foundations of a Roman temple in the 11th century. There are other notable medieval ruins in the town, including the ruins of St Botolph, an Augustine priory and the surviving gateway of St John’s Abbey.
