Hotel Industry Warned To Step Up Gas Safety Ahead Of Olympic Rush
Gas training engineers face a busy summer as hotel and guest owners look to double check their gas safety standards in preparation for an influx of visitors.
Fuel safety charity the Gas Safety Trust is reminding all UK landlords and hotel owners of their obligations under the Landlords safety legislation ahead of what promises to be one of the busiest summers on record for the UK tourism industry thanks to the Olympics.
A report funded by the Gas Safety Trust confirms that of the eight accidental fatalities involving natural gas in the home in 2010/11, five were associated with central heating appliances, two with cookers and one with a space heater.
The most frequent single cause of all 50 incidents during the year was flue/terminal fault (24%), followed by lack of servicing (19%) and appliance fault (17%).
Landlords and managers are being urged to ensure tenants and residents are provided with adequate instructions and that appliances in hotel accommodation are checked and serviced regularly to ensure they’re working properly.
Chris Bielby, Gas Safety Trust Board Chair , said: “ With the 2012 London Games generating unprecedented numbers of visitors to Britain this summer, it’s very important at this time to ensure that all gas appliances in holiday accommodation meets safety standards and is serviced annually by qualified professionals.”
“If you cannot remember when your gas appliances were last serviced, then you should take action now and arrange for them to be checked out by a Gas Safe Registered service engineer as soon as possible.”
